THIS HAPPENED


In 1953, Truck driver Elvis Presley made his first ever recording when he paid $3.98 to record two songs, “My Happiness” and “That’s When Your Heartaches Begin,” as a gift for his mother. The songs surfaced 37 years later as part of an RCA compilation called Elvis—The Great Performances.

 In 1964, The Rolling Stones appeared on the US chart for the first time when their cover of Buddy Holly’s “Not Fade Away” peaked at #48.

In 1966, Bobby Fuller, who was just 23 and enjoying success with “I Fought The Law,” was found dead in his car in Los Angeles under mysterious circumstances; the police ruled it a suicide, but everyone who knew Fuller refused to believe it.

In 1974, As the result of a guilty plea to marijuana possession in England six years earlier, the US Justice Department ordered John Lennon out of the country by September 10. The decision was later reversed.

In 1980, Billy Joel held the top position of both the US albums and singles charts. His album Glass Houses contained his first #1 hit, “It’s Still Rock ’N’ Roll To Me.”
