THIS HAPPENED

In 1965, Four Tops went to #1 on the US singles chart with “I Can’t Help Myself.” Lead singer Levi Stubbs had not been satisfied with the recording session and was promised that he could do it again the following day, but that never happened so the version that became a smash hit was just Stubbs’ second vocal take.

In 1971, Carole King started a five-week run at #1 on the US singles chart with “It’s Too Late.”

In 1973, The stage version of The Rocky Horror Show opened in London. The production starred Tim Curry, who also later appeared in the 1975 film.

In 1994, Fueled by the hit song “Interstate Love Song,” Purple by the Stone Temple Pilots, was the #1 album in the country.

In 2014, Gerry Goffin, who co-wrote over 100 Billboard Hot 100 hits, including eight chart-topping songs, with his then-wife Carole King and with others, died at the age of 75 in Los Angeles. His hits included “Will You Love Me Tomorrow,” “The Loco-Motion,” “Go Away Little Girl,” and “Theme From Mahogany (Do You Know Where You're Going To).”
