Girl And Girl Session with Julie Slater
Discussing the new album Call A Doctor
Recorded in The SoCal Sound Studios, performing 3 songs + Interview
Four-piece Australian rock band Girl and Girl from Brisbane are made up of Kai James on lead vocals, Jayden Williams on guitar, Fraser Bell on bass, and Aunt Liss (Melissa James) on Drums. (Yes, Aunt Liss is in fact Kai James’ own Aunt!)
SoCal Sound listeners might remember hearing Girl and Girl while they played the SoCal Sound’s Radio Day stage at SXSW 2024 in Austin.
Call A Doctor Marks the first full length album for the band, which deals heavily on mental health and other existential complications that lead singer and song writer Kai James has dealt with during his life, and expressing it in raw extravagant rock and roll form
Much of the album’s theme is a calling out from a mental health crisis, and James’ explains to Julie Slater “The idea was to be a sort of concept album, and I kind of threaded that, doctor theme throughout… It's my inner doctor helping me. I think is the idea, and. Yeah. Call A Doctor is that sort of title track intro is intro on Call the Doctor, essentially the same song. We just split it in half to make it radio friendly. . And that was once that was finished, it was like, that felt like a, I don't know, a big, huge sort of musical number to me. And then I kind of wanted to keep along that theme of being really dramatic and, this sort of, hypochondria doctor stuff, which has been a very prevalent theme throughout a lot of my life"
Girl And Girl performed 3 songs; “Intro - Call A Doctor”, “Hello”, “Strangers (Fight Night)”
Girl And Girl “Call A Doctor” is available now on Sub Pop
