88.5 FM receives so much music on a daily basis... CDs, downloads, reissues, box sets, cassette tapes, vinyl records and more. Songs are generally chosen by committee at the station, but it's the job of the music director to go through the stacks and stacks with a fine tooth comb. This blog may include major label releases, independent artists, even random submissions for your listening pleasure.
Music Director Picks #6
J.S ONDARA - SAYING GOODBYE
J.S. Ondara grew up in Nairobi where the social structure can make it difficult for many families to get by. Ondara has mentioned he always had food on the table and there was always a small, battery powered radio close by. His early introduction to music had him falling in love with rock & roll... with instrumentation, with lyrics, with story telling. Ondara would eventually move to Minneapolis, not far from the birthplace of Bob Dylan, to continue to work on his own music and carve out his own path. The album Tales of America will be available in February 2019. Ondara recently performed for North American crowds as an opening act for Anderson East.
BROKEN BELLS - SHELTER
After some teases on social media from Danger Mouse, it looks like this super duo is back. The last record we heard from Broken Bells was back in 2014, but now fans are treated to a brand new song called "Shelter". Both Danger Mouse and James Mercer have been busy working on other projects, but it's clear that another Broken Bells album is in the works. It's been reported that the new album still does not have a name and there are still some songs to complete. 88.5 FM will certainly stay on top of this matter and bring you news as it breaks.
THE WATSON TWINS - ROLLING THUNDER
This Los Angeles based identical twin duo was born in Oklahoma and raised in Kentucky. These LA folk scene staples have most notably collaborated with Jenny Lewis and some others in the past, but these sisters are fabulous singers and performers in their own right. This song "Rolling Thunder" is featured in the new album Duo which is actually their 6th studio album.
